The Brown Pelicans

My big friends
Glide so gracefully just above the waves
Looking for fish…
Or maybe sometimes just for the thrill of it.

Ah, but when you spot the fish,
What a show begins!
You swoop up to gather force,
Then go into a dive,
And with wings half spread out to the side
You hit hard—Ker-splash!
Then bob up, very often with your desire achieved.

But you have been made vulnerable, my friends,
For others see your success
And want a piece of the action.
When you surface, there they are
Waiting to steal the fish out of your pouch
Before you can get it down your gullet.

Now you’re in a dilemma.
What do you do?
The fish is wiggling in your pouch,
But to get him down the hatch
You’ve got to point your bill toward the sky
And open it just a bit.
And that’s when they snatch.

So you fish for yourself and for them,
For so God ordained to feed you both.
He gives to the just and to the unjust alike.

And sometimes at your expense.
